Analytics news: May 2026

We'll remember May 2026 for one day rather than the whole month. Google Marketing Live took place on May 20, and as usual Google showered agencies and clients with announcements. This time the focus is on Tag Manager: official confirmation of a refreshed interface and a fundamental change in its architecture.

On top of that, there's an interesting small addition in Looker Studio and a very important Consent Mode deadline, announced earlier: June 15 is the cutoff date for correctly sending ad_storage consent on your site. In May, Google Analytics also got a new channel, so we no longer have to build a filter for AI traffic by hand.

Google Marketing Live 2026: "Tag Manager for everyone"

Google wants GTM to be the default tag management tool for every advertiser, even one who today only uses gtag.js pasted into the site's head. Instead of clicking through several tools to see what our tags send and where, we get a data flow map at a glance. Interestingly, access to GTM was presented from within Google Ads.

GTM with centralized management

I think the biggest consequence of this change is that responsibility for tag settings shifts toward GTM. Until now we've lived in a hybrid setup: part of the Google tag configuration in GA, part in GTM, part in Google Ads properties. That could lead to chaos and a typical problem we see in audits, where three people from different teams set up the same configuration in different places.
After centralization things will be simpler, but it also means that access to GTM matters more than ever. If someone had GTM access only to add an event now and then, there's a good chance that after this change they'll have real control over data collection across several systems.
It's worth noting that GTM isn't supposed to change automatically: at first, every owner will be able to migrate to the new interface at their own pace. At least that's what the announcements I found while going through May's news say.

MMM-based budgeting in GA4

Google announced that its marketing mix model (Meridian) will be integrated directly into GA4. What's new is scenario-based budget planning with projections, plus an Incremental Conversions report that reconciles results from MMM, multi-touch attribution and incrementality tests in a single ROI view. The model has also been extended with impression data from external platforms (Meta, TikTok, Snap, Pinterest). These tools require GA4 360 (the paid version). To me, this is the most interesting announcement. If Google really builds a working feature for evaluating spend and planning budgets, it will be a very interesting part of GA4 360.

Looker Studio Pro: Slack integration

Looker Studio Pro now lets you schedule report delivery straight to Slack channels or users, as a PDF with a "View in Looker Studio" link. You set it up under Enterprise Admin → Slack Integration.

The feature is only available on the Pro plan, so the audience is fairly narrow.

Google announced this back in April, but the deadline, June 15, 2026, lands in our May roundup as the last chance to get clients ready. Google Analytics will stop controlling the flow of data to Google Ads. Control moves to Consent Mode at the Google Ads level, specifically to the ad_storage parameter.

Until now, both Google signals (a GA4 setting) and ad_storage (Consent Mode) had to be set to "granted" for Google Ads to receive user identifiers from GA4. After June 15, only ad_storage decides. If it's missing or set to denied, Google Ads won't get user identifiers beyond the data in the URL, regardless of what's set in the GA4 interface. Google signals stays in GA4, but only for reporting additional information about users.

For implementations where Consent Mode v2 is correctly configured through a certified CMP, in theory nothing changes. ad_storage is already the main control there, and it will stay that way after June 15.

But for implementations where the consent banner skips ad_storage or sets it to denied by default, missing ad_storage consent will block Google Ads from accessing the user identifier after June 15. Make sure your site sends the required parameter. You can use this Chrome extension: Consent mode Inspector by InfoTrust

GTM will build tags for you as you navigate the site

Google is working on Visual Event Builder, a feature where, instead of configuring settings in GTM by hand, you navigate your site to the events you want to track and GTM builds the whole structure for you. Just click through a conversion and GTM creates the configuration. Sounds promising!

It sounds promising, but as someone who sees every day how complicated real e-commerce sites can be, I have my doubts. I expect automatic event building to handle a simple site well, but not to produce sensible tracking on more complex sites or online stores. We'll see how it works in practice. It will certainly be useful in companies where working in GTM isn't a daily task and the site itself isn't demanding to track. It can speed up all kinds of implementations, both for analytics and for marketing.

Google Analytics adds a new AI Assistant channel

Google Analytics has introduced a dedicated AI Assistant channel group that aggregates traffic from ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. Sessions from these sources go to the AI Assistant medium. That's good news, because until now we had to configure our own channel groups by hand. Note that only three main platforms are listed as qualifying for this group: ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. For most companies, though, this grouping will be enough. Keep in mind that it only covers traffic that comes directly from a conversation, when someone clicks a link suggested in a chat with an AI.
